2012 Canadians: BC's Shallon Olsen tops Junior Qualifying; Brittany Rogers 8th in Senior

Day one of the 2012 Canadian Championships is complete following the conclusion of the women's artistic Junior and Senior qualifying competitions.

Shallon Olsen (Omega) leads the junior women into the finals scoring 55.650 ahead of Rose-Kalam Woo (Quebec) and Aleeza Yu (Ontario). Olsen had competition best scores on vault (15.900) and floor (14.050). Other BC gymnasts were: Nicole Chow (TAG, T12th), Taylor Chan (TAG, 15th), Makinli Handley (OGC, 19th) and Clair Kaji (Flicka) who only competed on bars.

In the senior women's competition, Brittany Rogers (Flicka) was the top BC athlete as she tied for 8th with a score of 52.400. Kristina Vaculik (Ontario) was the top qualifier followed by Victoria Moors (Ontario) and Ellie Black (Nova Scotia). BC was also represented by Briannah Tsang (Flicka, 11th), Shae Zamardi (Flicka, 17th), Taylor Ricci (Flicka, 18th), Laura-Ann Chong (Flicka, 19th) and Emma Sibson (Flicka) who only competed on two events.

Notably absent on the opening day of the championships was Peng Peng Lee (Ontario), who was on her way home Tuesday with a dislocated knee after a crash landing on vault during a practice session on Monday. Lee, Canada’s top performer at the 2011 world championships in Tokyo, will undergo an MRI in Toronto on this morning to determine the extent of the injury to her left knee.

The top 16  in both Junior and Senior will compete again on Thursday for the all-around title.
