Team B.C. won its second bronze medal on Monday at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.

The men's team featuring Aaron Mah (Phoenix), Steven Chaplin (Twisters), Michael Sibley (Flicka), Camerson Stanley (Langley), Alexander Farquharson (Delta) and Darren Wong (Phoenix) scored 309.709 points to finish behind Ontario (325.240) and Quebec (323.642).

Particularly around registration deadline dates, I hear Gymnastics BC member fees referred to as ‘GBC insurance’.

To be fair it’s not that many people and I don’t get the impression that it’s a judgement of Gymnastics BC or what we do as organization. Rather I think it’s simply a statement of what is felt to be the most relevant service that GymBC provides as part of annual membership fees.

At Vancouver’s Baby and Family Fair, Gymnastics BC hosted a Try Gymnastics Zone. All kids were welcome to try some beginner gymnastics.  

Throughout the weekend, the Gymnastics BC staff overheard dads (AND moms) say that since their children were boys, they didn’t need any gymnastics info. At the same time, their boys were having lots of fun trying gymnastics!

  • Falls account for the largest proportion of all injury related deaths and hospitalizations among older persons in BC.
  • Injuries from falls account for 85% of all injuries to older persons.

Can athletes thrive on a plant based diet?

According to the Association of Dieticians of Canada, four percent of Canadian adults are vegetarian, and roughly two percent are vegan. There are many reason they make this choice – ethical, health, religions, etc.

Regardless of the reason why, the number one question is always “Where do you get your protein?”

And for an athlete, that is a valid question. Can athletes train hard, be successful and stay healthy on a vegan diet?

2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Coming To Montreal

Canada’s bid to host the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Montreal has been provisionally accepted at an executive committee meeting of the international gymnastics federation (FIG) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Acceptance of the bid, a joint effort of Gymnastics Canada, Gymnastique Quebec and the City of Montreal, is conditional on a site visit by FIG officials in November.

Coaches ViaSport has announced that coach Karin Jarratt (Whistler Gymnastics) is the 2013 recipient of the Regional/Provincial Coach of the Year award. The award is one of two 2013 B.C. Coach of the Year Awards presented by Coaches ViaSport and supported by the Bob Bearpark Foundation.

GBC adopts Junior Olympic program for 2014-15 season

As of September 1, 2014, Gymnastics BC will use the USA Junior Olympic Program (JO) for its provincial level competitive categories. JO will replace the Canadian Provincial Program (CPP), GYMSTART and KIP. Interclub and Performance Plus will continue to be offered, but the athletes will now also have the option to easily transition to the JO program levels 1 and 2.

Gymnastics BC statement in response to arrest of member coach

This morning the Langley RCMP released information that Gymnastics BC and Langley Gymnastics Foundation member, John Henry, was charged with Sexual Interference. The Langley Gymnastics Foundation and Gymnastics BC are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. Mr. Henry has been suspended by the Langley Gymnastics Foundation and Gymnastics BC pending the outcome of the judicial process.

Gymnastics Canada announces new program director - artistic gymnastics

Gymnastics Canada (GCG) is pleased to announce that Mr. Karl Balisch will be joining the GCG management team as the Program Director – Artistic Gymnastics.

Balisch has worked in a management capacity at all levels of the sport of gymnastics, including 5 years with Gymnastics Canada as the Program Director – Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (2000 -2005). Through his work experience, he has been exposed to the municipal, provincial, national and international sport communities and governing bodies. Balisch brings extensive experience, knowledge and understanding of the sport, passion and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Kyle Carragher heada shotKyle Carragher (TAG, right) heads a group of eight B.C. trampoline gymnasts nominated for the 2013 World Age Group Championships in Sofia Bulgaria from November 14-17.

Carragher is a triple threat for medals as he will compete in three events – men’s DMT (15-16), trampoline (15-16) and tumbling (15-16).

Five FIG men's artistic gymnastics judges in B.C.

The FIG hosted a Continental Judging Course in Montreal this past weekend. Following a series of exams, B.C. now has five FIG judges.

Re-certifying for the next quadrennial are Jeff Sutherland, Todd Sader and John Carroll. Joining them are Michael Hood who is returning to the FIG ranks and Chris Sheremeta who certified for the first time.
