Listening versus hearing

Anyone with teenagers understands the difference between listening and hearing. How many parents have reminded their teens to empty the dishwasher or what time they’re leaving for gymnastics?

And how many times has the dishwasher stayed full and the teens late for gym? Why? Because the teen “didn’t hear you”.

More communication and less conflict

I have a belief. No, that isn’t my attempt at a Martin Luther King “I have a dream” moment, it’s much simpler and one you’ve probably heard many times. But, I do feel it’s worth sharing, if only as a reminder.

I believe open and clear communication is the single most effective way to resolve conflict. But my belief goes deeper; I think communication is the best way to avoid conflict.

Expectations of good customer service

Membership fee versus insurance fee

Particularly around registration deadline dates, I hear Gymnastics BC member fees referred to as ‘GBC insurance’.

To be fair it’s not that many people and I don’t get the impression that it’s a judgement of Gymnastics BC or what we do as organization. Rather I think it’s simply a statement of what is felt to be the most relevant service that GymBC provides as part of annual membership fees.

Show me the money!

So your club needs to raise money for a project. Maybe you want to replace your sprung floor, buy a new pommel, implement an athlete scholarship program or even completely renovate your facility.

You quickly realize that your project’s cost makes it impossible to achieve without financial support from donors or an outside group. You start the process of “finding money” and task a group of parents with fundraising. They develop their fundraising plan and strategy, begin to pound the pavement and shake every possible ‘money tree’ they can find.
