BC’s top artistic gymnasts proved to be fierce competition at one of the most important national events of the season. The 2017 Elite Canada competition in artistic gymnastics took place in Halifax from February 1-5, setting the stage for BC athletes to make their mark amongst high performance gymnasts from across Canada. In the Junior Men’s All Around (16-17), Vancouver Phoenix athletes Darren Wong and Chris Kaji took home silver and bronze medals, respectively. Wong continued to dominate in the Junior Men’s event finals, winning gold on floor and parallel bars, silver on pommel horse and vault, and bronze on rings. Kaji earned three podium finishes, winning gold on rings and high bar, and bronze on floor.
Devy Dyson of Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics pulled away a bronze medal in the Senior Men’s All Around competition. In the senior event finals, Twisters athlete Zachary Clay won silver on rings and parallel bars.
Sydney Turner of TAG Gymnastics narrowly missed the podium in the novice finals, placing 4th on floor and uneven bars.
At the junior women’s final, Lucia Jakab of Okanagan Gymnastics finished just shy of a bronze medal, placing 4th in vault. Vancouver Phoenix athlete Imogen Paterson also came close to a podium finish, placing 4th on uneven bars.
Olympian Shallon Olsen (Omega) defended her title as Elite Canada’s women’s vault champion, once again winning gold on her best apparatus. Olsen also placed 4th in the All Around.
