Gymnastics BC mourns the death of Chris Buccini

It is with great sadness that Gymnastics BC shares the news of the passing of Chris Buccini. A Gymnastics BC Member of Distinction and long-time coach of Trail Gymnastics, Chris passed away on Wednesday, January 2.

Chris served as a Gymnastics BC board member for 19 years and was the association’s vice-president from 1988 to 1989. He frequently attended Gymnastics BC events such as the annual Congress and AGM. In 2006, Chris worked tirelessly to host a successful gymnastics competition as part of the BC Winter Games in Trail.

Chris’ passing is a great loss to the community of Trail and for the gymnastics community throughout British Columbia.

A community leader

In 1982 Chris was named the girls’ head coach and became the backbone of gymnastics in Trail.  Now 30 year later, countless athletes have benefitted tremendously from Chris’ dedication to gymnastics.

Beyond coaching the athletes, he was a leader for the club and community. Following an explosion within the club in December 1989, most of its equipment was destroyed. In just one month, Chris had the club back in operation and then led the fundraising campaign to secure new equipment to make the club better than ever.

He also contributed to the success of the gymnastics programs at J. L. Crowe Secondary School and Rossland Secondary School. Both schools are regular participants at the BC Secondary School Championships with strong results.

As one of Gymnastics BC’s oldest clubs, Trail Gymnastics has thrived as a result of the hard work, dedication and passion of Chris Buccini. Gymnastics BC is also richer from his involvement in our sport.
