Gymnastics BC statement in response to the charges against Scott McFarlane

VANCOUVER, B.C.—January 30, 2018—Gymnastics BC is aware that Scott McFarlane, a gymnastics coach registered with Gymnastics Ontario, has been charged with numerous sex related offenses. Mr. McFarlane has been suspended from Gymnastics Canada and Gymnastics Ontario in accordance with their policies; through a national reciprocity agreement, Gymnastics BC has enforced this suspension, making Mr. McFarlane ineligible to become a member of Gymnastics BC or coach in British Columbia.

“We are saddened to learn of this situation,” said Gymnastics BC CEO, Brian Forrester. “As the governing body for the sport of Gymnastics in BC, the safety of children participating in our member clubs is the primary concern of our association.”

Although Mr. McFarlane has never been a member of Gymnastics BC, he has previously worked as a guest coach at Gymnastics BC training camps. Gymnastics BC has not received any complaints related to Mr. McFarlane, however the association encourages anyone who may have concerns related to this coach to contact investigators at the Special Victims Unit from the Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3460. Anonymous information may also be submitted by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca or by sending a text message to CRIMES (274637) with the word “PEEL” and then your tip.

Through its policies, procedures and practices, Gymnastics BC implements a variety of measures to promote participant safety, such as requiring that all coaches working in Gymnastics BC member clubs complete Respect in Sport and Making Ethical Decisions training, as well as enforcing a comprehensive Police Record Check policy. The association continually works with its sport partners to ensure that its policies, procedures and practices promote safe and positive gymnastics experiences for all participants.

Gymnastics BC is actively taking additional measures to ensure its members participate in safe environments, with the principal aim of empowering its member clubs with the tools, knowledge and resources to protect children and youth from abuse. Working collaboratively with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and the Respect Group, Gymnastics BC, its Provincial counterparts and Gymnastics Canada are developing an integrated National Safe Sport framework that will include nation-wide initiatives critical to driving change within the system.
