Purpose & Overview

As Gymnastics BC (GBC) celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the Board of Directors is looking for a dynamic, innovative and forward-thinking leader to set the tone and implement strategic goals for years to come.  We are looking for someone with exceptional leadership skills and the ability to motivate, who is passionate about our mission, and has the ability to connect with our stakeholders.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for successful leadership, management, and delivery of the programs, services, policies, and initiatives supporting GBC’s strategic direction, including strategic implementation, accountability and key deliverables, which are set by the GBC Board of Directors.

The CEO is expected to manage the organization’s risk, human, and financial resources effectively and in a responsible manner, using strong leadership, administrative, communication, and people skills.

This individual initiates and directs the development of policies for Board approval and has the power to establish operating procedures (that are not in conflict with the Association’s bylaws or policies). The successful candidate will have sufficient authority to take measures that are necessary to carry out the duties of this position.

About Gymnastics BC

Gymnastics BC is the provincial sport organization responsible for the governance, promotion and development of gymnastics in British Columbia. Established in 1969 as a non-profit association, GBC provides support and services to its member clubs.

Gymnastics BC is the fourth largest provincial sport organization (PSO) in B.C. and the third largest gymnastics PSO in Canada, with over 54,000 member participants from 80 member clubs.

The activity of gymnastics teaches fundamental movement skills and is one of the pillars of physical literacy, which provides participants with the confidence and competence to be active for life. Today more than ever, people of all ages and walks of life need to incorporate movement and activity in their lives for physical, mental, emotional, and social health.

The developmental movement patterns taught in gymnastics facilities help participants develop agility, balance, coordination, and strength that can be applied in any other sport or physical activity throughout a person’s life. Approximately 95% of the membership represents this sector.

The sport of gymnastics focuses on the pursuit of excellence through various disciplines. Gymnasts of various levels train and compete in community, regional, national, and international events. Gymnastics facilities around our province offer programs for recreational and competitive levels.

Gymnastics is a conduit for healthy participation in activity and sport for people of all ages. Therefore, we are looking for a candidate that believes and lives the concept of being active for life, and is motivated to increase education, engagement, participation, and growth opportunities both provincially, and nationally.

General Skills and Abilities

Supported by a business and/or sport and recreation-related education, the ideal candidate will possess senior-level experience with provincial or multi-sport organizations. Candidates must have a proven track record in the areas of organizational governance and administration, finance, insurance and organizational risk management, marketing, and partnership development.

 

Experience & Education

  • A degree in business and/or sport and recreation-related discipline. 

  • Extensive senior-level sport leadership experience in innovative, progressive, and successful program development and implementation. 

  • Knowledge of BC’s amateur sport community is an asset. 

  • Experience working with a volunteer Board of Directors. 


 

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong organizational risk management experience, with robust understanding and experience of insurance-related risk management practices. 

  • Outstanding financial acumen, ranging from day-to-day accounting, up to financial reporting. 

  • Strong understanding of financial statements, and experience working with finance and audit professionals. 

  • Proven track record in working within tight budgets and maintaining profitability. 

  • A solid understanding of human resources issues, including harassment policies, and can easily and effectively resource solutions for human resource/volunteer issues. 

  • A solid manager and developer of people; empowers staff to exceed expectations and strive for innovative solutions. 

  • Strong understanding and applications of the Societies Act of BC.
  • Strong Board management, development, and organizational governance 
experience. Strong board relations and meeting management skills. 

  • Strong ability to build member trust, relationships, and engagement. 

  • A strategic thinker with the ability to conceptualize operational and business 
requirements; possesses strong business acumen, sees the big picture, and is able to develop operational strategies and provide guidance to assist the Board of Directors in attaining its goals. 

  • Can effectively support the Chair and Board of Directors. 

  • Proven ability to build and maintain multi-sector partnerships with PSOs and MSOs, national sports organizations, provincial and federal governments, and 
private sector sponsors. 

  • Demonstrated ability to leverage partnerships; works well with a wide range of 
companies and organizations to reach mutually-beneficial outcomes. 

  • Demonstrated computer skills. Understands the importance of technology in 
today’s business operations. 

  • Has built successful grant applications and is familiar with the sports funding 
community, as well as the business and philanthropic community, and has had 
success in sourcing new funding.
