B.C. Athletes Finish Strong at Elite Canada 2016


Congratulations to all B.C. athletes who competed in the 2016 Elite Canada Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Halifax on February 5-7. The competition saw a fair amount of B.C. representation, with the most buzzworthy performance being from Shallon Olsen of Omega Gymnastics who took home 1st place in vault. Here are some other performance highlights from Elite Canada:

Novice Women

Lucia Jakab of Okanagan Gymnastics Centre finished 5th all around with a score of 105.25. Ilka Juk of Omega Gymnastics also placed in the top 10, finishing 9th with 103.000 points.


Junior Women

Haley De Jong of Flicka Gymnastics finished 3rd in floor exercise with a score of 13.150, behind Jade Chrobok of Gemini Gymnastics (13.825) and Victoria Jurca of Gym-Fly (13.475)


Junior Men 

Chris Kaji of Richmond Gymnastics placed 2nd in rings with a score of 13.950, behind Anthony Tawfik of Futures Gymnastics (13.200). Kaji also placed 4th in Horizontal Bar with a score of 11.800.

Another notable Jr. Men’s performance included Dawson Friesen of Twisters Gymnastics, who placed 4th in Vault with a score of 13.500.


Senior Women

Shallon Olsen of Omega Gymnastics placed 1st in Vault with a score of 14.800, followed by Elisabeth Black (14.075) of Halifax ALTA and Maude Lebeau of Wimgym (13.375).


Senior Men

Robert Watson of Twisters Gymnastics finished 2nd in Floor Exercise with a score of 13.950. Watson tied for 2nd with Shun Tomizawa of Halifax ALTA (13.950), followed by Damien Cachia of The University of Calgary (13.250). Watson also placed 3rd in Rings as well as Horizontal Bar.

In Pommel Horse, Ken Ikeda of Twisters Gymnastics placed 3rd with 13.700 points. Scott Nabata of Kamloops KGTC took home 2nd place on Horizontal Bar (12.350) and 3rd place in Parallel Bars (14.050).
