December 2025 Safe Sport Feature: First Aid & Emergency Preparedness

December 1, 2025

Accidents can happen even in the safest training environments. Being prepared ensures that when the unexpected occurs, athletes receive immediate care and staff know exactly what to do.

First Aid Requirements:

  • At least one certified first aid provider must always be present in the gym.
  • Ideally, all coaches should be certified to ensure rapid response.
  • First aid certifications should be renewed every three years (or as required by provincial standards)

Emergency Preparedness:

  • First Aid Kits: Stocked, visible, and checked monthly.
  • AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators): Available and maintained.
  • Emergency Action Plans (EAPs): Posted in training spaces and practiced by staff.
  • Incident Reporting: Have a clear system for injury reports, accident claims, and follow-up procedures.

Supporting Athletes After Injury:

Responding with patience, understanding, and medical guidance builds trust and shows athletes that their well-being is more important than performance.

Why it Matters:

Strong first aid and emergency preparedness protocols protect athletes, reassure parents, and uphold a club’s responsibility to provide a safe training environment.
