November 2025 Safe Sport Feature: Creating Welcoming Gym Spaces

November 1, 2025

Creating a healthy, safe and welcoming sport environment means creating a culture where everyone feels welcome, included, and supported. Clubs that invest in this culture see stronger communities, happier athletes, and healthier outcomes for all.

Elements of a Welcoming Gym Space:

  • Clean, Maintained Facilities: Regular inspections, updated equipment, and clear signage (trampoline/foam pit safety, exits, hazard awareness).
  • Visible Codes of Conduct: Post club rules and values where athletes and parents can see them.
  • Inclusive Practices: Consider gender-neutral change spaces, language that respects identities, and accessible pathways for athletes with disabilities.
  • Clear Communication: Make sure all athletes and families know who to contact for questions or concerns.

Practical Steps for Clubs:

  • Develop a “Safe Environment Checklist” and review it monthly.
  • Ask athletes and families what makes them feel welcome, and act on the feedback.
  • Celebrate diversity with visuals, posters, and role models in your space.

Why it Matters:

When people feel safe and welcomed, they can perform, learn, and grow at their best. That’s the foundation of true safe sport.
