October 2025 Safe Sport Feature: The Rule of Two

October 1, 2025

Safety goes beyond equipment checks and certifications. It’s also about the relationships and environments we build every day. The “Rule of Two” is one of the most effective ways to protect athletes and coaches while fostering trust with families.

What is the Rule of Two?

The Rule of Two means that no coach should ever be alone with an athlete in an isolated setting. At least two responsible adults must always be present. This simple rule reduces risks of misconduct, protects coaches from false allegations, and reassures families that safety comes first.

How to Apply the Rule of Two:

  • In the Gym: Ensure training sessions always include at least two adults (e.g., two coaches, or one coach and one staff/volunteer).
  • During Travel: Keep groups together in public spaces. Avoid one-on-one travel in cars or hotel rooms.
  • Online: Never engage in private online conversations with an athlete. Use group chats or include parents/guardians.

Why it Matters:

The Rule of Two creates safe, transparent environments where athletes feel supported and coaches can focus on what they do best: helping athletes grow.
